When the new Thermapen was released I had to get one. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new motion sensing design. It was a bit of a hassle to have to close and then re-open the probe after the auto-off kicked in to turn it back on (a first world problem to be sure). Now I just have to pick it and it's back and ready to use. I can't get enough of that feature. The backlight is great and the rotating display can be helpful at times as well. All in all I love the updates. The durability has been amazing as well. My 4 year old decided he wanted to give it a try and ended up shutting the probe in the oven door. He bent the probe. I gave the probe a little adjustment and it was back in place, good as new. I'm not so sure other thermometers would have been that resilient. $99 is a lot to pay for a thermometer but it has paid for itself over and over again. I'm quickly learning to buy the best and junk the rest. This is THE BEST!
It’s difficult for me to put into words what the Thermapen MK4 means to me and my overall quality of life, that of my family, and that of those that swagger up to the bountiful trough of smoked meats I provide. Comparing this instrument of gloriousness to any cooking or bbq’ing temperature accessory is like comparing the Death Star to a package of Kraft singles that’s passed its expiration date.
Number 1. Why does anyone have Kraft singles? That’s not cheese homie. That’s a guy in a lab coat tinkering with leftover yellow chemicals.
Number 2. This Death Star has no secret hidden design flaws.
I bought a competitive product one time - the most expensive one offered at the time - and you had to hold the sides of it for an “instant” reading. The only problem was their definition of instant was about the length of the movie Rambo First Blood, which I have on loop at my home because I’m an American. Also, I have a unique issue in that I have human hands made of skin and that proved problematic in holding the device over a blazing inferno of lump charcoal for any period of time past 4 seconds into Rambo.
When I first saw this product I thought hey… $100 is a lot of money. I could buy hatchet and a betta fish, or a subscription to the meat of the month club (which prolly exists). To say I was naïve is to say Trump doesn’t tweet enough.
The Thornelious Pentacular 5000, as I like to call it, is as advertised. This thing knows when it’s dark outside. A freaking light comes on so you can see it. How can it do that? Why is it so courteous? How many tiny Harry Potter sorcerers live inside this magical wand?
Sometimes, I forget it’s on - because I talk to people sometimes - and I come back and this thing has turned itself off. What kind of a backroom gangsta deal did this thing make with the battery companies to allow that? Did he trade them a bottle of Pappy for it? Two bottles of Pappy? No, prolly just one, because two would be like 50 grand.
I don’t understand Thornelious’s ways, but I sure do appreciate the results. You want rare, you want medium, you want medium rare - done deal, Thornelious is on it in 2 seconds (if he’s hungover). You want well done? Get outta here, leave now.
Sometimes, I take it to restaurants, partly because I don’t want him to feel left out, but also I like to leave it on the table, just to let the establishment know that I’m there, and I like to party. You think the guys in back don’t know Thornelious is out there? Oh they know… trust me… they know. They know they better not be bringing no 150 degree internal temp out to this hombre. Thornelious will Dikembe that steak into the cheap seats and wave his probe in defiance.
I open. I close. I probe. I make it rain with grilling perfection, thanks to the Thornelious Pentacular 5000, formerly known as the Thermapen MK4. If you don’t buy one, I look forward to your term paper on the benefits of communism and eliminating puppies.
I had the classic before someone stole it. Replaced it with this one in pink, hopefully I get to keep it.
Love it. Also bought the leather case for it so I can travel with it. Some people travels with friends I travel with my thermometer. :)
Absolutely recommend this to everyone. Both pros and enthusiasts. Fits in your pocket and is fast and easy to use. The backlight sensor could be a little better. But put your finger over it to get the light to turn on.
The Thermopen is a great tool. I use it for everything from yogurt and cheese making to baking to roasting meat.
I recently mutilated the battery door and sent an e mail to customer service about it. The promptly sent me a new one and included a package of Jelly Belly jelly beans in the package. The door was easy to change. All in all 5 star service.
There are a lot of imitators (I went through 4 or 5 of them before taking the plunge and buying the real deal) but only one thermapen. Expensive, impossible to justify to a spouse, but once you've gotten used to its 3 second readings, there's no going back. The temperature assessment is so fast that you can literally pull it through a piece of meat and watch the temperature changing, like a topographical map. This enables a level of accuracy in cooking that is simply impossible otherwise. The shape and ergonomics are outstanding. I wish it was more affordable, but it's worth every penny.
This new version of the thermapen is a major improvement and is pretty much perfect. The wake feature is really helpful. Now you don't have to close and reopen the probe. That was always a pain when you would forget you left it open, it turned off and you have only one free hand.
The thermometer is only surpassed by the service from ThermoWorks. I had some issues with some other products I had purchased from them and was about to give up on future purchases. They went above and beyond to solve my issues and have won a customer for life. I have purchased about 10 thermapens and give them as gifts to chefs that work for me.
Horrible Customer Service; Failed to Honor Warranty
Horrid customer service. I used the thermapen once and the next time i went to use it, it wouldn't turn on. i sent it back for a warranty repair and was told that because the thermometer had been exposed to a temperature over 122 degrees, the warranty would not be honored. They offered me a $14 discount off the full list price even though before christmas, they were selling for ~$79. How is a thermometer that is marketed on the website as safe for use on a grill - as I used it - not going to be exposed to temperatures over 122 degrees? There is literally a video on the website showing a guy using the thermometer on a grill - and that's what i did - and it stopped working - and they failed to honor the warranty. terrible service. there are similar comments on amazon regarding failure to honor warranties. i'd look elsewhere.
Response from ThermoWorks
We sincerely apologize for your poor experience while seeking help with your Thermapen. While the housing of the your Thermapen was melted, allowing moisture to get inside (which damaged the electronics), our technician mistakenly told you that it could not be repaired. One of the best things about Thermapens is that they can - under most circumstances - be repaired. We have contacted you and hopefully, have been able to set things right.
As a note about the Thermapen's housing temperature rating:
The Thermapen is meant to take instant readings and should not be held over high heat for an extended period of time (temperatures in excess of 122°F) or placed on a grill top or grate between readings. If you hold the Thermapen with your bare hand while taking a temperature reading to take a quick read, it is unlikely that you will over-expose the housing to heat. If, however, you wear a mitt that protects your hand from the heat, you'll want to remember that your Thermapen needs to be protected, as well. The best way to do this is to quickly take the temperature reading and then, place the Thermapen in a safe spot until you need to use it again.
About the Thermapen Mk4 warranty:
The Thermapen Mk4 includes a two-year limited warranty and guarantee against defects in either components or workmanship. The warranty does not cover fair wear and tear, abnormal use or storage, incorrect use, neglect, water damage, misapplication, modification, or abuse. ThermoWorks reserves the right to evaluate all warranty claims before any action is taken, and at its discretion may repair or replace without charge.
The best of the best.... I am a cater to big events. Last weekend i smoked and cooked 400 lbs of brisket and not a single one was overdone or rare.... Awesome pen..... Waterproof is awesome and the rotating display is spot on.... Love how fast these things are, can't keep my hand in my cooker for long, these get the job done so i can check the meat and get the lid down on the cooker again......
I was used to the meat thermometers that took about 5 or 6 seconds to register a temp. The MK4 is awesome, usually in about 1 second for me. Also, the quality is fairly high. I highly recommend this product.
An all around accurate and well-constructed instrument. But the rather antiquated display edge-lighting is disappointing, providing rather poor contrast. If there will be a model MK5, please upgrade to a true backlit LCD (it would also likely reduce battery demand). Would be willing to pay an additional say $10 for an upgraded display as described.
I have had my Thermapen for several years (6-8) I LOVE it. It is my go to kitchen's; tool. I am not 100% confident when making jams & jellies so I did some research and found temperatures for rapid boiling jellies. It was so spot on that I made a batch of jam. My cupboards are full, I'm out of empty jars. I even pack it and take it with me when vacationing in Condo's or our snowbird camp sites.
I purchased the MK4 based on other reviews & because I needed an accurate thermometer with an easy to read display. I was also very happy with my ChefAlarm so this also influenced my decision. I do not have any regrets about purchasing this item. Its a bit pricey but well worth the $$$ -- I have an orange one -- the bright color makes it ultra easy to find. The needle is long so there is no burning yourself when using it on the barbecue or stove. It is very fast when taking a reading & accurate. My husband loves using it too. Barbecued meats have turned out great -- no more overcooking. The MK4 has a very easy to read display! I am also very glad that is uses AAA batteries. If you are contemplating the purchase of this item, I would highly recommend taking the plunge!
I got this a few weeks ago. I joined Meathead's web site, and got "inspired" to do a bit more smoking and grilling. I have a dual wireless thermometer to measure the food and the smoker, but the probe measures one spot. That caused a problem when I smoked a turkey. I have a ThermoPop and really like it, but I had few bucks to spend, and decided to upgrade.
For starters, it works a fast as they say. I got the MK4 because I wanted the longer battery life, and it uses AAA so I don't have to mess with a button battery that I might not have, when I have a drawer full of AAA.
The one thing that surprised me was how big it is. (I did not check the specs first.) I am not complaining! Between the length of the probe, and the size of the body, it keeps you pretty far away from the fire. That a good thing as far as I am concerned. I highly recommend this!
When grilling it is important to keep the temps consistent and accurate for the best outcomes. We camp and in the woods at night its difficult to tell how far along in the cooking process you really are. The MK4 has made all aspects of cooking in less than ideal conditions better. I can take readings without removing from the grill by placing the MK4 in a mitt. Waterproof feature was tested when we left it outside. At home you can check super fast without letting out heat & easy to see (without glasses). Optional clip please. I have the silicone and leather case, an outdoors man I was hoping for something more like a knife sheath.
Either way I highly recommend this. Thermopop is my backup but you will wind up upgrading to this . It really is worth the money and you will appreciate it after only a few uses. I also own several other products for grilling and have given them as gifts with lots of thanks returned in the form of great grilled food!
This is simply the best thermometer I've even owned. Response time is fast. Display is easy to read, and can be set custom to your liking. The weight and feel of the unit is great. You can quickly feel and see that it is high quality, and will last a long time. It just feels good in your hand. I also purchased the silicone boot with the magnets on the back so I can stick it to my fridge. It's also nice it takes a simple AAA battery, instead of those watch batteries.
For something that's as important as a thermometer in the kitchen, it's worth spending the money on a good unit. I've bought many others that have failed, at the worst time of course, before finding this one.
I love how quick the Mk4 measures temperature and how accurate it is. When I make coffee, the Mk4 confirmed that water boils at my elevation at 207 degrees F. Knowing that coffee is best roasted at 195-205F, I use the Mk4 to watch the hot water temp drop when I pour the boiling water into my room temp stainless steel French press. It dropped about 14 degrees, so I now heat up the press to keep the steeping temp closer to 200 instead of the low 190s. I have been measuring all sorts of stuff with this like the temperature of the hot tap water. Because of its speed, I can slowly insert it into a pot sticker to see that while the outside was close to 180 degrees, the inside was still 130 degrees and needed to go back in the boiling water. This is a major help to ensure that things get to the safe temperature to kill any pathogens. I have been taking it to friends houses to show it off to them and they get a kick out of it too. It is so much fun to use!
I have a quick question can these Thermapens be switched to Celsius? We have ovens that only use that temperature range and I love your stuff but it would be pointless to buy one if it didn't work in Celsius
If you have any more questions about this, please contact us at email@example.com. Our Technical Support team is always happy to help.

Just received my Mk4. Used it tonight and it works as advertised. Customer Service was beyond expectations. Even got a small package of Jelly Beans in the package. Thank You you have a life time customer. Customer service is above 5 star.
I was watching Cook s Country and saw how the cooks used it. I figured why not give it a try. The pen is superb! Easy to use and clean. It helped me discovered my oven was off by almost 30 degrees after I checked the internal temperature on my flan. I ordered one for my son who loves cooking.
My daughter got me a Thermapen Mk4 for Christmas. It works great and allows for more confident cooking of meat. In addition, the Customer Service department was terrific. I had put the Thermapen down on a surface I did not realize was hot, and it melted the handle and I wasn't sure if it could be trusted. I emailed, got a prompt reply, decided to send it in for testing. Throughout the process, I was kept fully informed and, for a minimal price, I have a perfectly functional Thermapen and I love using it!
Would definitely recommend the product as well as the service to anyone.
First let me say, I am a professional chef. I have had five Thermapens since they've come out and countless other brands over the years. I love the fast response time of the TP. I love the color selections. Here's what I still am waiting to see improvements on: A CLIP!!!!!! Why can't we have a clip on this thing? I'm tired of dropping it because it falls out of my pockets. I've had five because of breakage! I don't want to buy another accessory for a hundred dollar thermometer! A stronger battery compartment cap-one that use of a coin doesn't wear down quickly. A slimmer design? Maybe? I realize that your tech. may require the size, but the Thermapen really is huge. A slimmer design would allow single hand use. When I'm on the line I really need to be able to use it with one hand.
Okay, besides my gripes, I really do love the product, just wish it had a couple more features that would make it easier for my use and to keep without breaking.
Thanks for your feedback! We're so glad to hear you're enjoying your Thermapens and are happy with the response time and the color selections.
In our drop tests, Thermapens perform similarly to good mobile phones. Where drops are a significant risk, we recommend a Silicone Boot which acts like a protective phone case. It will protect the Thermapen from drops, radiant heat, and harmful oils in the kitchen. We have, though, passed your comments along to our product development team.
Unit provides quick, accurate temperature checks. But it is clearly designed to be easy to use in one's right hand. It can be done left handed, but the ergonomics of the grip surface are right handed. For the lefty the proble must be rotated fully opened which is sometimes a clumsy angle for getting to the right spot on the meat without inadvertently contacting a grill surface with one's hand.
They claim that because of the flipping display that this works well for the left handed individual. It just does not work out that way. The truth is that it only sort of kinda works with the rotating display. The ideal way to use the Mk4 is when the prob is at a 90 degree angle to the body of the unit and this can't be done with the right handed Mk4. Us lefties have to use it only in the straight up and down fully extended position which exposes one's hand and the screen of the unit to the full force of the heat and steam rising from the pot of interest. I like these units but I am just saying they are not left friendly and should not be advertised as such.
I had a polder thermometer before I decided to invest in the mk4 and just assumed that all thermometers took 15+ seconds to stabilize at a temperature reading. Using the mk4 is a completely difference experience- the readings are super fast! The tip is very small, leaving only very small holes behind in the food that is probed. You also only need to insert this thermometer around an 1/8 of an inch into your food to get a reading, which makes it ideal for reading small pieces of food such as a piece of meat on a kebab or a thin burger patty/chicken breast. Great work, Thermoworks!
