    Smoke FAQ

    1. Will Smoke work with other ThermoWorks probes?

It depends. Smoke accepts all Pro-Series® Probes that also work with DOT® and ChefAlarm®. These probes feature a headphone-jack-style connector. Smoke does not accept the two-prong plug-style thermocouple probes that work with ThermaQ® and other ThermoWorks handheld thermometers.

    2. Will the Smoke receiver work inside my house?

Will Smoke transmit from the backyard to inside my house?

Absolutely. The Smoke Receiver will receive the signal from Smoke up to 300 feet away with a clear “line of sight.” Inside your house the maximum distance may be less than 300 feet depending upon the number and type of walls between the Receiver and the Smoke unit.

    3. How is Smoke different from my ChefAlarm?

Smoke accepts two probes that are displayed simultaneously, whereas the ChefAlarm only has one. Smoke includes a receiver that allows you to track temperatures remotely from up to 300 feet away. The ChefAlarm does not. The ChefAlarm features a timer that is not on Smoke. Both Smoke and ChefAlarm feature high and low alarms and continuous Min/Max displays. Both accept the same Pro-Series® Probes.

    4. How is Smoke different from my ThermaQ?

Smoke uses Pro-Series® Probes with thermistor type sensors. ThermaQ uses Type-K thermocouple probes known for increased accuracy and durability. Smoke includes a receiver that allows you to track temperatures remotely from up to 300 feet away. The ThermaQ does not. Both Smoke and ThermaQ feature two channels with high and low alarms and continuous Min/Max displays for each channel. The probes are not compatible between Smoke and ThermaQ.

    5. What is the Smoke Gateway and how will it work?

The Smoke Gateway is an add-on accessory that works with your Smoke units. The Gateway hardware bridge receives the wireless RF signal from Smoke and uses your existing Wi-Fi network to push the readings to your Smartphone or Tablet App. Each Smoke Gateway will work with only one Smoke.

    6. Will Smoke Gateway (Wi-Fi Bridge) work with my existing Smoke or do I need to buy a new Smoke base unit?

Smoke Gateway works with your existing Smoke. You will not need to buy a new Smoke. Smoke Gateway simply retrieves the wireless transmission from Smoke and pushes it to your Smartphone.

    7. Can Smoke be used to track two meat temperatures?

Yes. Both Smoke channels will accept any Pro-Series® Probes. You can track two meat temperatures or two air temperatures or use the Pro-Series® Needle Probe to track Sous Vide temperatures or the 12-inch Pro-Series® Probe to track homebrew mash temperatures. Smoke comes with one High Temp Penetration Probe for meat and one High Temp Air Probe & Grate Clip for the pit. Optional probes are available for a variety of cooking applications.

    8. What is Radio Frequency (RF) and how does it differ from Wi-Fi?

RF is a simple, robust, and reliable wireless technology for sending your Smoke temperature data to the Smoke Receiver. Your Smoke and Smoke Receiver come pre-paired in out of the box and will remain paired as long as they remain within distance. Wi-Fi uses radio signals to connect devices to the internet and requires additional hardware, setup and connection protocols.

    What is an IP Rating?

An IP rating, also known as "International Protection" or "Ingress Protection" rating, is a value assigned to a product that determines its susceptibility to ingress from solids and liquids. The first numeric digit relates to the level of protection against solid objects, and the second numeric digit indicates the level of protection against liquid ingress. Click for a table of IP Rating values.

IP65 - No ingress of dust (6); Protection from water ingress: Low pressure jets of water (5).

Got my Smoke today, and put it to use to grill a couple of chicken breasts. It worked brilliantly, as expected.

The upside of being able to leave the grill area and monitor temperatures remotely from the receiver is so huge it hardly need be described. I like the DOTs, but this is really a lot more convenient, and I expect to mainly use the Smoke for temperature control on my grill going forward.

A minor critique for Thermoworks: Like the Big Timer, this product leans back at a very narrow angle, which is unsuitable to typical grill surfaces that are approximately waist height. I'm 5'11" so it isn't like I'm an NBA player. The units send their data to my stomach, not eyes. Seems like such a basic oversight for a company that is so focused on good end user design.

So far so good
I bought this to replace a [competitor's product] because I got tired of having to buy replacement probes. Previous experience with other ThermoWorks products make me think Smoke and its probes will be more durable. On first use I found that it is very easy to use. I did have to calibrate both probes +1 degree in boiling water to make them agree with my Thermapen. It would have been nice if calibration instructions were at the website as indicated in the printed directions, but it was easy enough to figure out. The advertised transmission range seems about right. It is better than my [competitor's product] but still not good enough to cover my whole house. I will definitely be adding the wifi option when it is available. The pendant receiver is ok, but I wish it had a kickstand so I could set it on a table and be able to read it from a distance.

EXACTLY what I was looking for.
I got steered toward the Smoke and after reading and reviews, decided to take a chance and pre-order it. It is very easy to set-up and works exactly as I expected/wanted it to. I used it for the first time last night. I was able to get everything going and sit inside and watch TV while I monitored the grill and food temp with the remote. The wife asked "when is dinner going to be ready?" I said when the little alarm goes off and it tells me it is done. As someone who is used to "eyeballing" my food on a traditional grill, this takes some getting used to, but is very cool. Both units seem to be of excellent, high quality and very substantial in construction, as do the probes. My only complaint would be to have included a short food probe as well (I just ordered one). I made a beer can chicken and the I had to be pretty creative for placing the probe in the thickest part of the breast and not having it hit the lid when inserted into the top of the tall 4LB bird.

Great remote thermometer
I have been using the other brand of remote thermometer for years and have actually gone through multiples of them. They all tend to drop signal easily and the latest version is frustrating to program.

Now for the Smoke! I got it yesterday and put it into a brisket last night, super easy to program. The signal stays strong and the display is super easy to read. It is obviously durable and I love the magnate on the back. It makes my smoker look so high-tech with it attached.

The only downside I can see is the weight of the remote. Rather than using the neck cord, I am using a holster I had from another product.

Thermoworks really knocked it out of the park with this! As with everything they manufacture, this is a great product!

Great but..
I was a bit worried when I first ordered.. hmmm, why pay twice the price of others. When I received this, I realized why: Very, yes, very, well built. My reason for not 5 stars are the connectors. Someone errored here in using the same cheap connectors of the lower priced competition rather that the very reliable flat pin type used on so many other thermoWorks products.. and Why?

Response from ThermoWorks
Thank you for your feedback and the opportunity to discuss the type of connector Smoke includes.

We chose to use the headphone-jack style connector because Smoke uses thermistor technology to measure temperature rather than thermocouple technology. Additionally, our experience is that this type of connector is just as reliable as the flat-pin thermocouple connector you are used to.

Great Tool
I received my "Smoke" last week and finally got to use it today. So far I am loving it.

Pros: Easy to set up. Great build for the money -- solid, sturdy, protected.

Cons: Non as of yet (3hrs. into a cook and yes, the alarms do work.)

I have used another brand; yet, did not have much confidence in it. "Smoke" has satisfied my prejudice of ThermoWorks producing the highest quality thermometers...I just feel comfortable I am getting accurate readings. At the end of the cook, I will check it against my Thermopen. The "oven" monitor is right on with the fan sensor reading.

Great Thermometer!!!
I've had other remote thermometers before. None can hold a candle to my Smoke. I don't know how I ever lived without a second probe. I know exactly what my smoker is doing, no guessing. One thing I would like to see is a small storage case to hold both units and probes. Once again, this is an excellent product.

Finally, A Wireless Thermometer That Works
We live in a large, stone house. For years I have been looking for a wireless thermometer that will get through the walls. I think I have finally found it. I have been testing the Smoke throughout my house and it seems to receive the signal almost everywhere. I smoke a great deal and being able to monitor the temperature without going outside is great. Especially now that "winter is coming."

worth the upgrade
After transitioning from a Weber kettle to a WSM, I purchased a [competitor's product]. Soon the grill sensor went kablooie. I decided to upgrade when I saw the Smoke. Received it yesterday and smoking some baby backs today. So far I like it much more. Appears to be more rugged and intuitively adjustable. Really shows how poorly the WSM thermo registers the temp. It is definitely worth the upgrade.

A Superb Thermometer
Today, I used my new "Smoke" for the very first time. I shoved the probe into a 3 lb. Rib Roast, set the oven to 325 F., and let things cook until the internal meat temp. got to 150 F. Perfection ! The roast was cooked exactly as I wanted it. While waiting for the roast to cook, I sat in another room and watched TV and monitored the temperature on the remote. I highly recommend this device, it takes all of the guesswork out of cooking meat safely & properly. When spring arrives, I will cook something outdoors in a smoker, but it's too cold here in Central Canada right now to do that.
