Thermapen Review
Don't take our word for it.
Thermapen Reviews. Independent Recommendations.

See how others review the Thermapen in books, magazines, product reviews, forums and blogs. The Thermapen has got to be the most written-about thermometer since Gabriel Fahrenheit first published a description of his thermometer. So, why knock ourselves out to write glowing sales copy on the Thermapen when all these well-qualified cooking experts can give you an opinion you're more likely to believe?

Cooks Illustrated / America's Test Kitchen
Something Special Gift List, 2006
The Thermapen has appeared on America's Test Kitchen again-and-again over the last few years. It has also rated #1 in their magazines each time they write about instant-read thermometers. This is the latest word from them:

"Sight, touch, and instinct are age-old ways to gauge when food is done, but for consistent results, none is as reliable as taking the food’s temperature. We use our top-rated instant-read thermometer, the ThermoWorks Thermapen, many times a day in the test kitchen. Recently, a Super-Fast Thermapen came out, and it is indeed a little faster than the standard version, which is no slouch."

Alton Brown's Good Eats
The ultimate "science-guy-chef". If you've been a fan of Alton Brown you've seen the Thermapen in many episodes of "Good Eats". Here's what Alton says in his "GEAR" book: “The best instant-read I’ve used.” (pg. 166) “The thermometer I use most is the Thermapen by ThermoWorks, and, no, I’m not paid to say that. …edges out other (cheaper) digitals… …faster than any other model… My Thermapen can take a clear internal reading on a wafer-thin piece of sole; cheaper models are very unsure of themselves if the food is less than 1 inch thick.” (pg. 167)

Check Alton's website for his appearance schedule or foodnetwork.com for your local TV schedule for "Good Eats".

MacGourmet
“I've messed around with cheap cooking thermometers in the past, purchasing, I think, probably 3 different models. None of them worked well. They were slow, and they were inaccurate. And they were slow. Did I mention they were slow? …Well I can tell you, after purchasing one and having it for a while now, that the ThermoWorks Thermapen is worth every goshed-darned penny…"

MSN: Six Must-have Grilling Tools -
"If you've used a so-called "instant-read" thermometer in the past, you probably noticed that it takes up to a minute to get a reading. It's like watching a Polaroid develop, only you can't even shake it while you're waiting. The Thermapen is different. It will give you an accurate temperature reading in less than three seconds..."

The Good Machines -
"The Thermapen is fast - it reads temperatures in a matter of seconds and it's accurate."

iHeartBacon.com
“My birthday wish came true and I got a thermapen. Yes, A THERMAPEN. After screaming for a few seconds, I ran around taking the temperature of the air, the ground and generally anything that was soft enough to poke a needle into. The thermapen is ridiculously expensive, but the fact that it can take a temperature reading IN 4 SECONDS FLAT is truly amazing. It even came with calibration papers. CALIBRATION PAPERS! I love it more than anyone in their right mind should love a thermometer. I kind of want to carry it around in my bag and whip it out at restaurants. Okay, not really.”

Cooking for Engineers
"As you can see from the results, there is no comparison between the Thermapen thermocouple thermometer and any of the others. The speed is amazing - about one second for a ballpark value and two more for dead accurate. Three seconds is such a short amount of time that the time it takes to position the probe in the middle of the roast is almost the same time it will take for the Thermapen to take a reading. ...If you only have space for one thermometer, save up and treat yourself to the ThermoWorks Thermapen. It's fast. Very fast. It also comes calibrated with documentation to prove it. ...The probe tip is very thin (like a thick needle), so measuring the temperature of a 1/4 in. steak is no problem at all. The temperature range is greater than most thermometers and it's also really easy to read."

Virtual Weber Bullet
"There is no better instant-read thermometer than the Thermapen. While other "instant-read" thermometers take 20-30 seconds to reach a full reading, the Thermapen is done in just 4 seconds! ...Can be recalibrated or repaired if damaged. ...worth every penny."

"These Superfast themometers ROCK.  You only have had to experience the wait for a temperature reading from a cheap digital thermometer to appreciate the speed and accuracy of the Thermapen.  The hair on my arm has grown back since I’ve started using a Thermapen. ...I have had one for a couple years and it’s fantastic."

The Geeky Gourmet
"Over the years, Cook’s Illustrated has repeatedly heaped praise upon the Thermapen, a digital thermometer known for its speed, accuracy, generous probe length, and convenient folding design. ...clearly it is a device to be reckoned with. ...Those in the know consider Thermapen to be the crème de la crème of such devices. ...All in all, I wonder if the Thermapen isn’t becoming the iPod of kitchen gear."

Nelson’s Weblog
"Usually high tech gizmos are a failure in the kitchen, but the Thermapen is an exception. It's a true instant read thermometer: stick it in the food, wait two seconds, and you know the temperature to within one degree.
It's expensive at $85, but it's so much better than conventional cooking thermometers it's worth it. The difference is it uses a scientific quality thermocouple instead of a cheapo thermistor."

Amazingribs.com: Meathead’s Hot Stuff Award!!

FORUMS

Quotes from Cooks Illustrated bulletin board:
“I figure my Thermapen has paid for itself. The fact that expensive cuts of meat are cooked to perfection, has made this a wise purchase. I had purchased an instant read from a kitchen store, but it was useless. Wisest investment I have made this year.”
-SMFUR

“I think the $85 for a Thermapen pays off very quickly. It's amazing how less stressful cooking is when there's no "guessing game" as to whether the food is at the right temp and/... Well, with thermapen, you just can't get any better than that. It's accurate AND fast. Use it once and you'll wonder how you did without it. At least that's how I felt.”
-GCSC15

I've got the new super fast Thermapen and consider it one of the most wisest investments I've ever made in the kitchen - worth every penny for sure!... It's the only instant read thermometer on the planet worth buying. My previous purchase was about $50 (can't remember the brand), so I thought for that kind of money I should be getting something decent. Well, when I finally tested it out with ice water, I discovered it actually took a whopping 50 seconds to give a final reading, which was off by around 4°F!! Far from "instant" if you ask me, making it completely usless really!
