How RFX works
Communication flexibility for every cooking scenario.
1. RFX MEAT connects to RFX GATEWAY via patent-pending sub-GHz RFX wireless technology.
2. When connected to Wi-Fi, RFX GATEWAY sends data to our mobile app via ThermoWorks Cloud. Or, cook offline with a direct gateway-to-smartphone Bluetooth connection. (Offline mode coming soon)
What the pros are saying
“I’ve been waiting two years for this. RFX will not only supplant the existing products but create a new category of reliability that doesn’t really exist.”
—Jeremy Yoder, culinary mastermind behind the “Mad Scientist BBQ” YouTube channel
“Now that’s technology you can count on.”
—Tuffy Stone, legendary pitmaster, restaurateur, and BBQ Hall of Famer
Go further with ThermoWorks App + Cloud
Supervise in real-time:
Track your cook from anywhere, set crucial alerts, and instantly view cloud data in our mobile app.
Access powerful data tools:
Monitor temperature highs and lows, visualize data with graphs, and make informed adjustments using the cloud.
Connect devices securely:
Lock any device to your cloud account to protect data and prevent accidentally connecting to your neighbor’s gateway.
Accuracy in every sensor
Roast, smoke, grill, and fry meats to restaurant-level perfection. Four hidden probe sensors are independently calibrated to find the true thermal center of your cook—and deliver ±0.9°F accuracy between 14 and 212ºF (-10 and 100ºC).
Precision you can trace
Each RFX MEAT probe comes with a digital certificate of calibration to certify that your instrument has been tested against international laboratory standards, including those set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Ambient temperatures you can trust
Competitors’ built-in ambient sensors give inaccurate readings as cold meat acts as a heat sink, pulling heat from the metal probe and skewing the measurement of the ambient sensor by 75°F or more. Even if these sensors were accurate, they're placed in an evaporative cooling zone around the meat. This means your ambient sensor is not reading the accurate temperature of your cooker. Our Pro-Series® Air Probe plugs directly into RFX GATEWAY for precise placement and true ambient temperature measurements.
How RFX stacks up
Move freely around your home, yard, or business.
When unobstructed and in direct line of sight, our signal reaches up to 1,500 ft between RFX MEAT and RFX GATEWAY. (That’s over 1,000 ft further than our closest Bluetooth competitor.)
The secret behind our superior signal
Bluetooth operates at a 2.4 GHz frequency, which means more signal peaks per second. Higher frequency signals experience greater attenuation, or loss of strength, when encountering obstacles like smoker walls. That's because shorter wavelengths are more easily absorbed.
The patent-pending sub-GHz wireless technology of RFX operates at a much lower frequency, 433 MHz, which translates to fewer signal peaks per second (longer wavelengths) and significantly better penetration through barriers. This lower frequency allows RFX to blast through thick metal smokers, home walls, and other robust obstacles, ensuring a strong, reliable connection no matter where you are. Stay truly connected with RFX.

This is only the beginning
We’ve future-proofed RFX. Both RFX MEAT and RFX GATEWAY are the first in a series of innovative products built on our patent-pending industrial radio frequency network. Watch for new probes, sensors, and gateways coming soon—rest assured that any RFX probe or sensor will connect to any future RFX gateway. No planned redundancy here.
* The number of probes connected at one time can be 50-70 depending on transmission rate of RFX MEAT probes
** RFX MEAT battery life is dependent on RFX MEAT transmission rate
