SCALE UP!!
"I smoke a lot. . of meat! This scale is epic. If you want measure ever bit of your cooking, smoking or cheffing from smash burgers, to pork belly, to that delicious crème fraiche, it handles it all. If you take your smoking serious and you don’t have one of these, can you even call yourself a true chef. . doubt it!! Go get a Gravitas scale now!!"
Good, but slow
"I generally like the scale, but it is slow to respond which will be a problem when I am pouring flour or liquid. My existing scale seems a bit faster, but is not instantaneous and I have to remove excess when I over pour, The scale just arrived and I have not used it for baking yet. My evaluation in testing the scale shows a few minor issues in addition to the speed. For testing, I used calibration weights that my late wife, a pharmacist had. These were from a 1,2,2,5 set and I used weights between 100mg and 50g for my tests. In addition, I used a closed container of water weighing about 500g and another weighing about 3600g to check sensitivity. Accuracy tests between 1g and 90g showed the scale to be right on. Tests with 100mg and 200mg weights showed that the scale was not consistent in detecting the addition or subtraction of 100mg. Since this is at the limit of the scale's resolution, I am not too concerned. If I need really accurate or precise measures in the 0-100 g range, I will get a smaller scale. More importantly, adding and then removing a 1, 10, or 50g weight when either the 500g or 3600g container was on the scale behaved as expected with the display increasing or decreasing by exactly 1, 10, or 50g. This means that I can weigh small amounts, e. g. yeast or salt in containers that weigh much more, but the slow response time makes it difficult to, say, add 7g of yeast on top of 500g of flour in a large container, Repeatability is also good. Putting either the gram level weights or the water containers on and off the scale repeatedly produced consistent readings each time the weight was added and readings of 0.0g when it was removed. Sensitivity around the platform is not quite uniform. Using the 500g water container, I first placed it in the center of the platform, then in each corner. This produced readings from 517.2 to 517.5 g as seen in the photos. The differences range from 0.0g in the lower right to 0.3g in the upper left and were repeatable over several cycles. This should not matter unless subgram precision is needed and the items to be weighed are distributed around the platform container being used. This is shown in the attached figures. I plan to investigate the speed further taking videos as I add a steady stream of water or salt to a container with a fast timer in the background. Until them, my workaround is to weigh ingredients that cannot be easily and cleanly removed into separate containers. This should allow me to measure the time between the end of the stream and the stabilization of the reading."
"We love our scale (when we finally recieved it). Unfortunately we did not recieve our scale when it was originally promised to deliver and about halfway through the process we were asked to select a gift for the troubles and never recieved it. No doubt about it though the scale is worth the money!"
Totally worth the premium pricing
"Fit and finish are remarkable and far superior to all of the cheap crap out there. Looks great on the countertop and it's a substantial size too. The display is clear, oversized compared to what I had and yes. . . . BACKLIT, a major plus for me. Response-time is fine. Auto-off as well. The rubber buttons have a great tactile feel to them. The stainless steel plate is substantial and of course the removable display is crazy-useful for measuring larger items. Yes you can buy cheaper scales. But once you use this one, all others pale in comparison. NOTE: It took me a few minutes to realize that the detachable display and the base unit each has its own battery compartment. Once I loaded them both with batteries, we were good to go. (Batteries are included, a nice touch. )"
Slow and Backlight Turns Off Too Soon
"A bit disappointed with this scale. The backlight turns off too soon. It only goes back on when you add more ingredients but that is a bit too late for me. I want to see how much more of an ingredient I need before adding it to the bowl. Also the scale is slow to calculate weights."
Great scale. Very easy to use and works great
"I love this scale. I use it daily. I no longer have to have another small scale to get to tenth of a gram accuracy. The detachable display is so useful, no more struggling to see what the reading is. Just stick the display to the wall in front of you or leave it on the counter away from the large bowl on the scale."
Nice addition to my cooking tools.
"This scale replaced my Taylor small scale. The Taylor served me well for over 20 years. I had to open both battery compartments to remove the insulating battery plastic strip. In total the scale uses 6 batteries. I was not expecting that. I enjoy cooking pizza and breads. The scale is impressive with the removable display in that I can use a large bowl when measuring the flour for the recipe. Less kitchen equipment I need to clean. I look forward to many years of constant use in the kitchen. I have quite a few ThermoWorks products. The customer service support is one of the big reasons I purchased this scale. I have used customer service a few times and have always received a response to the product question or the service issue. The scale came with a matching color trivet and a pack of jellybeans, both a nice touch."
"They cleverly give you the ability to take the readout physically off of the scale so that large bowls or other items do not obstruct your ability to read the scale."
Quite slow for the price
"I was really excited for this product as I’m a big fan of my Thermapens and have know for them to be quite responsive, and especially given the direction of the newest thermapen, I would have expected speed to be a priority. They say with engineering comes trade offs in display resolution, but I’ve tested this scale against my OXO (the most direct competitor), and two of my Acaia scales, and they all easily beat the Gravitas. I’m not sure if there’s something up with some folks batches, but to me this seems very substandard for what was marketed as an improvement over other offerings. The build quality seems nice and I like that the display is wireless, but did that choice come at the sacrifice of speed to measurement? Would love some clarity as to what the expected speed is"
"I very much appreciate where this scale is going, in what I expect will be future versions. Ergonomically, it needs more generous space on its edges for fingers to get under to lift it. It is heavy, which is good for the tool it is. It is slow to register weight changes, so pouring liquids can be particularly challenging. I haven’t personally qualified its accuracy, but given the pedigree here, I don’t doubt it. As a direct competitor to the Oxo, I like it a lot, but… this currently lacks, with speed being its only significant annoyance."
Q&A
- Can the tare weight be customized to account for the the weight of an empty container without food/liquid/etc. before use or do you have to place your empty container first?
- You have to place your empty bowl on Gravitas before taring.
- The kitchen scale that I use now also has a timeout that turns off the display after 5 minutes of inactivity. When this happens, if I press the power button it will bring back the previous measurement (just like Gravitas). HOWEVER, there is a flaw in their design, in that if the weight on the scale changes in any way after the screen times out, then the scale will discard the current weight and reset itself to zero (auto-tare) when it's turned on again. I want to make sure this does NOT happen with the Gravitas. If the 5-minute screen timeout happens and weight is added or removed before pressing the power button to resume, does it show the correct weight based on the original tare amount before the timeout happened or does the tare reset?
- Yes, Gravitas will show the correct weight.
- IF YOU PUT A BOWL ON THE SCALE DOES THE SCALE ADJUST BACK TO ZERO SO THAT YOU GET AN ACCURATE WEGHT READING OF YOUR INGREDIENT?
- Yes. You simply press the TARE button to tare (zero out) the bowl's weight.
- What is the backlight behavior for the display and is it configurable? The demo video shows the backlight turning on when the display is removed from the base. What are the timouts? What actions turn the backlight on/off?
- The backlight automatically turns on when Gravitas is powered on and when any change in weight is detected on the scale. The backlight turns off after 15 seconds of inactivity. The display remains on for 5 minutes after inactivity. The backlight timing is not configurable.
- Does the display have magnets to mount on a refrigerator for viewing?
- Yes! The display has magnets on both the bottom and the back of the display.
